My Epiphany I knew my kids reading this 40-book sequence could be life-changing. The question was: how to do it? If the idea only came from me with no structure, path, or plan, something otherwise meaningful would devolve into nagging and follow-up. The chances of success were literally zero.

I asked myself: Why do some things work consistently (school, sports, clubs, church) when internal projects at home so often fail?

I didn't want to be a dad with a booklist. I wanted my kids to join an academy, and for me to support them on their journey. It was a fundamental shift in mindset. If the idea could be “third-party-ized,” it would come with three obvious advantages:

  • Objectivity: Systems don’t have good days or bad days. They just have rules and outcomes.

  • Professionalism: When my kids see a workbook with thoughtful structure, it triggers the adult brain and puts them on a different path of action.

  • The Buffer Zone: The system itself acts as a buffer. It takes the heat so the parent can remain an ally.

So I stopped being a dad with a booklist. I became a dad who enrolled his kids in an academy. The difference sounds small, but it's everything.

Now, when my kids finish a book, they're not doing it for me; they're doing it for the Academy. When they earn their $100 commission, it's not from Dad's wallet; it's from a system that values their work. When they struggle with a concept, I'm not the enforcer; I’m the coach helping them meet the standard.

The Third-Party Effect isn't about outsourcing parenting. It's about structuring success so you can actually be present for it.

That's why I built Dirt Road Academy not as a reading program, but as a system that does the heavy lifting so you can do the relationship building.

Kids don't need another lecture about the importance of reading. They need a system worth joining, and an ally by their side.
